The Sweet Truth About Cinnamon

When we hear the word cinnamon, the first thing that comes to mind is a cinnamon roll. Its sweet aroma so inviting, with soft, good taste that is best paired with a cup of coffee. But, while it is associated with sweet pastries, the spice cinnamon is not really sweet in flavor and may even help in lowering your blood sugar level.


In fact, cinnamon has been recognized for its medicinal properties for thousands of years. People from ancient civilizations have used the spice for its health benefits. Now, recent scientific studies are confirming what the ancient people knew.


Cinnamon is extracted from the inner bark of trees with its woody parts removed, then dried and ground to form cinnamon powder. Cinnamon contains a compound called cinnamaldehyde which is believed to have great effects on health and metabolism.


To aid metabolism, cinnamon helps reduce insulin resistance. When the body resists the insulin it makes, the tendency is for our blood sugar level to rise. This is because insulin is a key hormone that regulates metabolism, or the process of converting the food we eat to energy.


Cinnamon also interferes with digestive enzymes to regulate the amount of glucose that enters the bloodstream, especially after a meal. Blood sugar spikes may be prevented when you eat cinnamon along with a carbohydrate-laden meal.


With cinnamon’s effects on blood glucose metabolism, cinnamon extract as a nutritional supplement may be recommended to help diabetics in managing their condition.  It may be added as a supplement to hypoglycemic medications, but make sure that this is done with the guidance of a doctor.
