How to Keep Your Cool this Summer

How to Keep Your Cool this Summer

The extreme temperatures during the summer season do not just take a toll on our bodies. Experts also say that hot – especially humid weather – is known to be associated with increases in aggression. [1]

In addition, bad habits such as sleep deprivation, dehydration, and restrictions on daily activities contribute to a worsening mood and depletion of serotonin – the feel-good brain chemical that is associated with mood and protects the brain under extreme conditions like high heat. [1] [2]

Mood swings can be caused by a number of factors including underlying medical conditions or common triggers (i.e. stress, significant changes in your life, your diet, and sleep habits).[6] Knowing how to manage moods can help us feel calmer, think clearly and get us back on track. Here are ways on how you can combat the intense heat and the changes in mood that come with it:

Have a steady routine

Just like clockwork, get up and go to bed at the same time each day and be consistent in your mealtimes. It’s also important that you do not skip meals as much as possible for this might contribute to your irritability. It can be a challenge at first, but once your system gets adapted to it, everything else will follow naturally! [2]

Stay active

Regular exercise is beneficial, just make sure it doesn’t become overly competitive. Heading to the pool or having a quick jog outside near bodies of water and trees can help you cool down. Even taking a long walk can be considered an exercise! [2]

Prioritize sleep

Set aside 30-45 minutes for a relaxed bedtime routine to help you get ready for bed. Turn the lights low, turn off the computer or TV, limit your gadget screen time, read a story, or take a cool shower or bath. In no time, you will find yourself on the way to dreamland. Relax and let sleep takeover! [2]

Prioritize comfort

Wear loose-fitting clothes made from lighter fabrics. Doing so will allow air to circulate around your body, keeping you cool. [3]

Stay hydrated

Drinking lots of water is essential to keep your body going. It also helps in replacing sodium lost through sweat which our bodies need to function properly. At the same time, avoid sugary drinks, alcohol, and caffeine which can put you at risk for dehydration. [3]

Get enough sunlight

UV light absorbed through your skin produces Vitamin D. Vitamin D plays many roles in your body which includes the promotion of serotonin production. Just make sure not to expose yourself too much under the bright rays of the sun; moderation is important. [5]

Apart from the steps provided above, what matters is that you loosen up, take a step back, and relax. We only have one summer season every year and it’s best that we spend it by having fun and keeping our cool. [4]

In 1987, Pharex then shifted to marketing and distributing generic products, while appointing Metro Drug as its exclusive brand distributor. This move proved to be timely because of the passing of the Generics Act of 1988. Many successful years followed, and in 2016, Pharex was acquired by RiteMED Inc. Even after more than 35 years in the industry, Pharex remains committed to empowering Filipino families by providing them with top-notch healthcare solutions.
