PICC, Manila- The Philippine Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP), in cooperation with PHAREX HealthCorp, held its second National Finals of the PAFP Family Case Contest on February 21, 2014. The event, which was one of the highlights of the 53rd PAFP Annual Convention, was held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC). According to PAFP President Dra. Christine S. Tinio, the contest challenges residents to approach a case through a unique objective: to present the family physician's patient centered, family focused, and community oriented approach to a more holistic management of illness.

By the time the competitors reach the National Finals, their ranks have already been whittled down to the best from each region (NCR, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao). Each region’s winner competes against the others for the title of Grand Champion. The finalists this year were Dra. Erica S. Gonzales of University of Santo Tomas Hospital from NCR, Dra. Sophia Marie G. Pagtakhan of De La Salle University Medical Center from Luzon, Dr. Michael S. Oliveros of Siliman University Medical Center from Visayas and Dra. Marie Applelyn M. Fabian from Mindanao. The Grand Champion was NCR representative Dra. Erica S. Gonzales, who took home a plaque, a cash prize of P10,000.00 and a brand new iPad Mini 2.

PHAREX has been sponsoring the event for the past two years as part of its partnership with PAFP. The success of the first year’s PAFP Family Case Contest paved the way for this year’s event and, eventually, commitment to hold the contest yearly until 2015. This would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the PAFP Family Case Committee, headed by Dra. Josephine I. Lapena and its Chairs, Dr. Regie Layug and Dra. Shiela Lavina. To formally seal the Family Case Contest partnership of PAFP-PHAREX, a Memorandum of Agreement was signed on February 18, 2014 by PAFP President Dra. Christine S. Tinio, PAFP Vice-President Dr. Eli AR. Belarmino, PHAREX President and CEO Mr. Tomas Marcelo G. Agana III and PHAREX
